You could never love them.
Stories you told me of days past.
The days of your youth spent in
ignorance. Those lonely paths you took.
You could never love them.
City by the lake, each room lit up at night
like fireflies flitting through a bog.
They blotted out the stars.
You could never love them.
School covered in spit. Their ire aimed
at you. What could a child understand
of war? Black versus white. White versus black.
You could never love them.
Family fled, city lights disappearing.
Where has your empathy gone?
The stars shone brightly.
I will never take on your speech.
Instead, I will complicate it.
